CFC Blue - Championship Match

Riverside Summer Shootout Asheville, NC

W 3-1

Reeling from a key injury and making a few line-up changes, the Lady Cobras came out on fire in the championship match.  Meredith Cole scored an early goal off a rebound shot by Claire Cabaniss.  Then Claire gave an assist to a streaking Celeste Kendrick who finished off a 1v1 opportunity with the keeper.  A late goal off a set piece by Ann Chapin Meekins following a hard foul on Cole going to goal finished off the stunned squad from SC 3-1.  The defense of Mary Francis Foster, Ellen Keeley, Katy Floyd, Katlyn Connor and Whitney Wellmon played great in the win.  Macey Wilkins had some fantastic saves in goal and was named tournament MVP for her play in the net.  We are the Champions!

Sat. Sep. 11 - 10am
vs. RCSA Rumble - @ Dunbar Park 1

L 3-1

The 94 Lady Cobras traveled to Forest City to take on the Rutherford Rumble in an early morning tilt on Saturday 9/11/10.  The match was preceded by a memorial service for those that lost their lives in the 9/11 tragedy.  A few words were spoken and bagpipes played Amazing Grace in their honor.  It was a nice gesture on the part of the Rumble organizers and helped everyone in attendance put their lives and soccer in perspective.

The Rumble came out fired up and took a first half lead of 3-0 on the Lady Cobras.  After re-grouping at halftime, the Lady Cobras played a much better second half by holding the Rumble scoreless and adding a goal by Celeste Kendrick to make the final score 3-1.  Ann Chapin Meekins and Krista Powell turned in a strong effort in the midfield for the Cobras.  The Lady Cobras will now turn their attention to getting some players healthy and getting ready for a tough HFC Red squad that comes into Cobra territory Saturday 9/18 at 2:00 pm.

Sun. Oct. 10 - 4:30pm
vs. TCYSA - @ Ramblewood 1

T 1-1

The Cobras scored first when a corner kick from Ann Chapin Meekins was cleared by the defense from the box straight to Whitney Wellmon who blasted a shot from 25 yards into the left corner of the net past the Twins keeper.  The half ended with the Cobras clinging to a 1-0 lead.

The Cobras came out strong in the second half and the first 5 minutes produced several shots on goal.  But the Twins keeper was up to the task and made some great saves to keep them in the match.  At about the 65 minute mark the Twins leveled the match on a cross from the right side that found a striker in the box who turned and scored.

The remainder of the match produced some furious runs by each side but neither was able to find the net and the key 1st Division West match ended in a tie.  Macey Wilkins continued her solid play in the goal for the Cobras and overall it was a great team effort both offensively and defensively.  Although the Cobras played well enough to win, it is always good to get a positive result at this level and they held their heads high on the way back down I-85 South after the 1-1 tie with a very strong side from TCYSA.
